Question Two

In this discussion forum, you will address the idea of biased language and how it impacts attitudes, behaviours, and perceptions, especially in online interactions. Attitudes refer to liking or disliking something, behaviours describe actions people do (speaking, moving, etc.), and perception relates to how humans think or process information or stimuli.

For your initial post, you must do the following:

  • Use and cite Bevan (Section 4.1) to define and explain biased language.
  • Share an example of biased language you have seen in some computer-mediated interaction.
  • Answer the following three questions:
    • How does biased language reflect the attitudes, behaviours, and perception of the sender?
    • How might biased language impact the attitudes, behaviours, and perception of the receiver of the content, and/or the sender, or both?
    • What is the significance of biased language in computer-mediated contexts specifically?

For this discussion forum, your initial post should be 300 to 350 words in length.

​You are required to write a 2700-word essay in response to the following provocation:

Fact or fiction. Truth and lies. Does it matter? Events like the Slender Man case are inevitable in the 21st century.

In preparing your essay you should:

  1. Choose two theorists you want to focus on. Theorists can be drawn from the unit, or can be other behavioural theorists you have become interested in (subject to teacher approval). Your aim should be to use several original works from the theorists you have chosen.

Theorist include: 

Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, Karen Horney, Carl Jung [bold one is which ones I want to pick]

2. Focus on the Slender Man case, but you may wish to branch out and consider other comparable occurrences.

3. Make an argument for why the events in the Slender Man case have occurred. ​Collapse of societal norms? Children not being supervised? Mental illness in society? Insecure attachment styles? Violence in the media? Study hard and be bold in finding your argument!
